On Monday the 10th of August, K-2 went to Taronga Zoo for the day. We had an incredible time watching the Seal Show, the Bird Show and visiting many, many animals along the way.

USA & CanadaAround the World in a Day was planned for Week 6 and we began our preparations early. 1/2J were given the region of USA & Canada to represent. Our classroom had to be transformed into the USA & Canada so Mrs McArthur decided on an Inuit theme to tie both countries together. Of course what would an Inuit classroom be without an igloo! Mrs McArthur challenged us to find a quick and easy way to count all the milk bottles we collected to build the igloo. We were put into groups and given a bag or two of milk bottles. We had to count our milk bottles and report back to the rest of the class. We ended up with a few different amounts written on whiteboards which meant we would have to add up lots of two-digit numbers. What a waste of time! Mrs McArthur helped us to work out that if we grouped our milk bottles into groups of 10 we could skip count them by 10s and we wouldn't have to do such a big calculation! So, each of the groups put their milk bottles into tens and we had a pile at the front for any leftover bottles. If a group had 8 bottles they could run to the front and grab 2 more bottles to make up the 10. We counted 217 milk bottles!
Rube Goldberg MachinesThis term's Ray White competition was to design a machine that has at least one pulley. For inspiration, we watched OK Go!'s cool video clip for 'This Too Shall Pass.' The video clip features the coolest Rube Goldberg machine ever! A Rube Goldberg machine is a device, contraption, invention or apparatus that is deliberately over-engineered to perform a simple task in a complicated fashion. After watching the video we played around with Lego, a marble track, dominoes and more to devise our own Rube Goldberg machines. |
