Literacy Groups 2016
Speaking and Listening with Mrs Smith
Speaking and Listening with Mrs Smith has been so fun!
Literacy Groups
In 1/2J we do Literacy Groups every day for at least 45 minutes. Students rotate twice per session between 4 activity centres; Read To Self, Reading Eggs, Word Works and Writing Centre.
Read To Self
This is a time when students sit silently to read a book of their choosing. They can cosy up anywhere in the room, with bean bags and pillows, to enjoy their book. This centre helps students develop their fluency and reading stamina, but most of all, it fosters a love of reading.

Writing Centre
This centre is completely self-directed, as students are able to choose the medium, purpose and audience for their writing. Our Writing Centre is on one wall of the classroom (see pics below) and features examples of a variety of authentic writing tasks, such as, a letter, poem, card, story, postcard and list. At the Writing Centre students can find proformas, for the above listed writing tasks; class journals on various topics, that they can contribute their stories too; a list of topics to write about and word cards featuring theme words, adjectives and WOW words, to make their writing more interesting.

Word Works
At the Word Works Centre students practise their weekly spelling words. Much like Writing Centre, the Word Works Centre is self-directed, as students can choose between a range of ways to practise their words. They can write their words on whiteboards, make their words with magnetic letters, write their words in rainbow letters or stamp them using rubber stamps and ink.

Reading Eggs
Reading Eggs is a fantastic resource for Literacy Groups. The program provides opportunities to practise phonics skills, word recognition, reading common sight words and comprehension skills. Students love moving through each "Map" (level).
