Ku-Ring-Gai Wildflower Garden 20 May 2014
On Tuesday 20 May the K-2 classes all went to Ku-Ring-Gai Wildflower Garden for an excursion about Minibeasts. Each class had their own ranger as a guide, ours was Ranger Linda. Ranger Linda first took us dip netting in the pond. We dipped our nets deep down into the pond and brought up all sorts of Minibeasts, such as Water Spiders, Backswimmers, Tadpoles, Dragonfly Larvae and many more.
Next Ranger Linda took us on a bush walk where, in the clearing, we discovered a Megabeast! It was a Swamp Wallaby. In the clearing, Ranger Linda gathered us into groups and gave us the task of making a group Minibeast sculpture. We collected sticks, bark and rocks to make our creations. When we were finished we were given some clay and we made our own individual Minibeasts, they were so cute!
On the way back up the hill for lunch, Ranger Linda allowed us to explore a Minibeast Habitat up close. We took turns to crawl through a hollow log that was lying on the ground. It was a bit of a tight squeeze! We then entered an enclosure that resembled a rainforest and we followed the paths searching for any Minibeasts that like the damp. Ranger Linda found one, a leech that attached itself to her ankle!
We ate lunch with the other classes and had a play on the playground then we enjoyed our final activity, a close up look at some real Minibeasts! We sat in a circle and Ranger Linda passed around some Minibeasts for us to look at. We even got to hold a Funnelweb Spider! It was encased in glass of course. We saw Cicadas, Redback Spiders and even a live Stick Insect which crawled up Ranger Linda's arm.
Then it was time to go home. What a fantastic day!
